Cachoeira da Primavera and Poço Halley: a swim close to Lençóis

Cachoeira da Primavera and Poço Halley: a swim close to Lençóis

Published on July 2, 2026 4 min Destinations

Among the various waterfalls that lie within walking distance of Lençóis, Cachoeira da Primavera and Poço Halley are the most visited — and the ones that best balance beauty, ease of access and good swimming conditions. Both sit inside the Muritiba Municipal Park and are usually done on the same outing.

How to get there

Both lie along the Parque da Muritiba route, which starts practically at the edge of Lençóis. The walk to them first passes Serrano and the Coloured Sands Hall, adding up to 4 to 5 km over the full route.

No car is needed: you can set out from the town centre on foot. That makes the whole circuit the most accessible tour in the region.

Poço Halley

It is a deep pool, ringed by rock walls, with water darkened by the natural tannins released by the riverbank vegetation.

That tea colour startles first-time visitors, but it has nothing to do with dirt — it is the same chemical process that darkens a herbal infusion. The water is clean and, although visibility is reduced by the colour, it is good.

The depth lets you swim properly and, in places, jump from low rocks — always after checking with the guide where the bottom is safe.

Cachoeira da Primavera

The falls are not among the tallest in the Chapada, but they form a wide, easily accessed pool, with flat rocks all around that work well for spreading out a towel, having lunch and drying off in the sun.

The name (Spring Waterfall) comes from the vegetation that blooms there at certain times of year, colouring the surroundings.

It is the spot where most groups make the longest stop of the tour.

Best time to go

Between November and March the volume of water is greater and the falls are more imposing. The pools fill up and the current is stronger.

Between April and October the flow drops, but the water becomes even more transparent and the pools remain excellent for swimming. The rocks around the edge are also more exposed, giving more room to rest.

Neither window is a bad one; they deliver different experiences.

What to bring

Swimwear under your walking clothes, a towel, sunscreen, water and footwear that can get wet and has good grip.

As the route crosses the riverbed and bare rock, flip-flops get in the way more than they help. Bring a plastic bag for your phone too.

Safety: the precaution that really matters

After heavy rain, the volume can rise quickly and the current changes character in a short time. A calm pool in the morning can become dangerous in the afternoon.

It is exactly in that situation that going with a local guide stops being about comfort and becomes about safety: someone who knows the river can read the level, the colour of the water and the sound of the rapids, and decides whether swimming is safe.

The other golden rule is simple and always applies: do not jump into a pool you do not know. The bottom may hide submerged rocks invisible from the surface.

Can you bring children?

You can, and it is a tour much in demand with families. The route is short, there is shade over much of it and there are several shallow pools.

The main precaution is the same as for adults: wet rock is slippery, and extra care is needed on the bare-rock sections.

How to fit it into your itinerary

Both are part of the half-day Parque da Muritiba tour, which most itineraries place on the first day — precisely because it is gentle, close by and leaves the afternoon free to explore the historic centre of Lençóis.

How much time to set aside

The two stops, within the Parque da Muritiba route, add up to a half day — around four hours counting the walk there and back and the swimming time.

Anyone wanting to extend it can combine it with Cachoeirinha or Ribeirão do Meio, also nearby, turning the outing into a gentle full day.

What makes these two special

The combination of easy access with genuine scenery. In many destinations, what is easy to reach has already lost its character to too much infrastructure. Not here: you walk in trainers, with no compulsory guide, and arrive at a pool ringed by forest and rock.

That is why these two stops are the favourites of anyone short on time in the region — they deliver the real Chapada without demanding a whole day.

About the dark colour of the water

It is worth stressing this point because it genuinely puzzles people: the tea colour indicates neither dirt nor a lack of treatment. It comes from tannins, natural compounds released by leaves and roots that fall into the water.

It is the same phenomenon as the black-water rivers of the Amazon. The water is clean, merely tinted.
