Lençóis is the gateway to the Chapada Diamantina and the base for the vast majority of itineraries. A former diamond-prospecting village, it preserves colourful townhouses, cobbled streets and a friendly nightlife — and, what matters most to travellers, it concentrates the region's best infrastructure for accommodation, restaurants, agencies and transport.
A little history (that explains the town)
The town was born in the 19th century with the diamond rush. The name (which means 'sheets') comes from the prospectors' white tents scattered across the valley, which from a distance looked like sheets laid out.
The money from prospecting built the townhouses you see today — mansions with Portuguese tiles, tall windows and colourful façades. When the diamonds ran out, the town shrank and stood still in time. It was tourism, decades later, that brought it back.
Understanding that changes the walk through the centre: every well-preserved mansion is a trace of an economic cycle that ended more than a hundred years ago.
Why Lençóis is the best base
Location. From Lençóis run the transfers to practically every classic tour: Muritiba, the caves itinerary with Pai Inácio, Fumaça, Marimbus and Roncador. Staying in another town means adding kilometres every day.
Infrastructure. ATMs, pharmacies, markets, a health post and a stable mobile signal — things not every village in the Chapada offers and that you miss quickly.
Airport. Lençóis Airport is a few kilometres from the centre and receives direct flights in high season.
Accommodation options. From simple guesthouses to boutique hotels, with real variation in price — which lets you adjust your budget without changing towns.
Tours that start on foot
This is the least publicised advantage of Lençóis: several attractions lie within walking distance.
The Muritiba Municipal Park begins practically at the edge of town and takes in Serrano — an expanse of bare rock with dozens of natural pools and channels that work like whirlpools —, the Coloured Sands Hall, Poço Halley and Cachoeira da Primavera, ending at a lookout with a view of the town nestled in the valley.
It is 4 to 5 km in total, easy to moderate, a half day. It is the ideal tour for the first day: it introduces the Chapada landscape without demanding too much, helps the body get used to the heat and still leaves the afternoon free.
There are also Cachoeirinha and Ribeirão do Meio, with its natural rock slide, both equally close by.
The historic centre
It is worth setting aside a late afternoon to wander with no destination. Praça Otaviano Alves is the hub of bars, restaurants and the life of the town. The Cultural Market usually has live music, and the cobbled streets around it hold studios and little craft shops.
The coloured sand from the Coloured Sands Hall becomes a picture in the hands of local artisans — it is the most characteristic souvenir you take from here.
Where to eat
The local cooking blends Bahian influence with drovers' food. It is worth seeking out dishes with godó de banana, sun-dried beef and the region's freshwater fish. There are also vegetarian options, more than the average for small towns in the interior.
How long to stay
Most itineraries use Lençóis as a fixed base for 3 to 6 nights, setting out on a different tour each day and returning to sleep.
That strategy has two practical advantages: you do not pack and unpack every day, and you can swap the order of tours according to the weather — flexibility worth its weight in gold in the rainy season, when a day can dawn overcast.
How to get there
There are direct flights to Lençóis Airport in high season, mainly from Salvador and São Paulo. Outside those windows, the route is to reach Salvador and continue by road — 6 to 7 hours by car on the BR-242, or by bus, with overnight options.
Many agencies arrange the transfer from Salvador or Lençóis airport, which takes care of the most tiring part of the arrival.
Is it worth staying in another town?
It is, in specific cases. The Vale do Capão attracts those seeking an alternative atmosphere and is closer to Cachoeira da Fumaça. Mucugê and Igatu, to the south, give access to other attractions and have historic charm of their own.
But for a first itinerary, taking in the region's classics, Lençóis remains the choice that minimises travel and maximises options.
Practical tips from people who have stayed
Bring cash: although there are ATMs, some attractions and small businesses outside town do not accept cards.
The mobile signal is good in the centre, but drops at various points on the tours. Agree a meeting point and time before setting out.
The nights are cool even in summer. A light top does the job, and you miss it if you stay out at a bar until late.
